OCD — When the Mind Gets Stuck in a Loop

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition where a person has unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that cause anxiety, and feels compelled to do repetitive actions (compulsions) to relieve that anxiety. The relief is temporary, and the cycle starts again.

🔄 What Are Obsessions?

  • Fear of germs, contamination, or getting sick
  • Fear of accidentally harming someone
  • Unwanted sexual or religious thoughts
  • Need for things to be perfectly symmetrical
  • Doubt — "Did I lock the door? Did I turn off the gas?"
  • Horrifying thoughts about loved ones getting hurt

🔁 What Are Compulsions?

  • Washing hands repeatedly (50-100 times a day)
  • Checking locks, switches again and again
  • Counting, tapping, or repeating words silently
  • Arranging objects in a specific order
  • Seeking constant reassurance from others
  • Avoiding certain places, people, or objects

💡 Important to Know

People with OCD are NOT "crazy." They are usually very intelligent and self-aware — they know their thoughts are irrational, but they cannot stop them. OCD is driven by overactivity in a specific brain circuit, and it responds very well to the right treatment.

OCD is NOT the same as being "neat" or "organised." Real OCD causes significant distress and takes hours from the person's day.

🧬 Causes

  • Genetic factors — OCD runs in families
  • Overactivity in certain brain circuits
  • Low serotonin levels
  • Sometimes triggered by strep throat (in children)
  • Stressful life events can worsen it

🏥 How We Treat OCD at Affinity Hospital

  • Accurate diagnosis by Dr. Neena Vijayvargiya
  • SSRI medications (most effective for OCD)
  • Exposure & Response Prevention therapy (ERP) — gold standard
  • Cognitive therapy to challenge OCD thoughts
  • Family guidance — how to respond to OCD at home
  • Long-term follow-up care

⚠️ When Should You Seek Help?

If rituals or intrusive thoughts are taking more than 1 hour of your day, or causing significant distress — seek help now. OCD does not get better on its own. With ERP therapy and medication, most patients see dramatic improvement.

OCD is treatable. Many of our patients have reclaimed their lives from OCD's grip. You can too.
